What a roof is actually made of

Most roofing quotes only talk about the tiles. The layers underneath are what decide whether it leaks.

Signs your roof needs looking at

Most of the expensive jobs we do started as something small that got left. If you can see any of these from the ground, it is worth a look now rather than after the next storm.

Slipped or missing tiles

A gap in the tiles lets water straight onto the felt. Felt is not a roof — it buys you months, not years.

Damp patches on upstairs ceilings

Staining, bubbling paint or a musty smell in a bedroom usually means water has been getting in for a while.

Moss and heavy debris

Moss holds water against the tiles and blocks the gutters. In a frost it lifts the tiles apart.

Sagging roof line

A dip or wave along the ridge can mean the timbers underneath have taken on water. Do not leave this one.

Cracked mortar on the chimney

Chimneys are the most common leak we trace. Failed pointing or flashing lets water run down inside the wall.

Water running down the wall

Usually blocked or split guttering. Cheap to fix now; expensive once it has soaked the brickwork.

Not sure?

Send us a photo on WhatsApp. We will tell you honestly whether it needs doing now, can wait, or is nothing to worry about — no charge and no one turning up on your doorstep.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a new roof cost in Essex?

A full re-roof on a typical semi-detached house in Essex usually runs £5,000-£9,000 depending on size, pitch, tile type and whether scaffolding is needed. Smaller repairs start from a couple of hundred pounds. Every quote is free, fixed and itemised, and we survey the roof before pricing rather than guessing from the ground.

Do you do emergency roof repairs?

Yes. We handle emergency call-outs for storm damage and active leaks across Essex. If water is coming in, call us and we will get someone out to make it safe and watertight as quickly as we can.

How long does a flat roof last?

A properly installed EPDM rubber roof should last 25-30 years, and GRP fibreglass around 25 years. Traditional felt is closer to 10-15 years. We fit EPDM and GRP as standard because the whole-life cost is lower even though the up-front price is a little higher.

Do you work with insurance claims?

Yes, we regularly carry out insurance-approved storm damage repairs and provide the written reports and photographs insurers ask for. If you are making a claim, tell us at the survey and we will document everything properly from the start.

Which areas do you cover?

We are based in Romford and work across Essex and East London within roughly a 30-mile radius, including Ilford, Brentwood, Chelmsford, Basildon, Grays, Dartford, Stratford, Harlow, Southend-on-Sea, Thurrock and Hornchurch.

Are you insured and accredited?

Yes, fully insured — public liability and employer's liability. W Martin Roofing & Contractors Ltd is registered in England and Wales, company no. 16283552, and you can check that yourself on the Companies House register. Ask to see the insurance certificates at the survey; any decent roofer will show you.

Will you give me a free quote?

Always. We come out, get onto or properly inspect the roof, and give you a written, itemised quote with no obligation and no hidden costs. We do not do pressure selling and we do not price on the doorstep.

How long does a re-roof take?

A typical house re-roof takes 3-7 days depending on size and weather, plus scaffolding time either side. We give you a realistic schedule with the quote and tell you straight if rain is likely to move it.

Can you match my existing tiles?

Usually, yes. For repairs and extensions we source matching tiles or reclaimed ones so the work blends in. On period properties this matters a lot and we take the time to get it right.
